Voluntary Internet Filtering
K-Rudd and Co. have decided Internet filtering might not be so feasible after all. Backing out of election promises/threats is stock standard these days, but true to form, they did at least manage to spend $300,000 on something they’ll now likely never use.
Here’s the highlights of the work of our superbly coherent government:
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy today told a Senate estimates committee that the filtering scheme could be implemented by a voluntary industry code.
“Mandatory ISP filtering would conceivably involve legislation … voluntary is available currently to ISPs,” Senator Conroy said. “One option is potentially legislation. One other option is that it could be (on a) voluntary basis that they (ISPs) could voluntarily agree to introduce it.”
In response Senator Minchin said he had never heard of a voluntary mandatory system.
(And my personal favourite:)
Senator Conroy responded with “well they could agree to all introduce it”.

It always surprises me how posts on politics are largely ignored here…
