Operating $ystem

// 3rd July

I wish someone would make a good free or open source desktop operating system. I know there’s Linux and Solaris, and a good many others, but they aren’t viable for me. Basically I want an operating system like Windows or MacOS (and if it combined the best of both that’d be ideal), but I don’t want to pay for it. I had a quick look around, and there isn’t much on offer. I’d like an operating system that would run any Windows or Mac application, that’d be nice. Maybe Google or Mozilla should make it. Something nice and solid and easy enough for the mainstream to adopt (whether they do or not, it makes no difference). Yeah. Guess I’m dreaming.

    Yeah. Not asking for much.

    Let’s see: You want someone to spend a fair bit of time developing an os that needs to be able to execute applications compiled in any other os and not want to be reimbursed for it. Yeah, I’m sure there are heaps of rich software developers out there willing to make your dream a reality. :)

    Wine is getting better to allow you to run (some) windows apps on a Linux system. Not perfect but its free.

    Alex, Jonny; Linux (and its friends) aren’t really an everyday desktop alternative at current.

    H, there’s plenty of software already made - Adobe made a pretty good reader, Google made a pretty good search engine among other things, Mozilla has made a lot of software, Sun made an operating system, Linux has a few operating systems floating around - I’m not asking for anything new here, I just want one that is a Windows/MacOS (either, both, somewhere in the middle)-type of deal, something solid and easy enough for the mainstream to adopt, like I said.

    t: I agree that most linux distro’s arent yet ready for the ‘mainstream to adopt’. That said, they’re working towards it. If the hardware side of things became more ‘open’ then these alternatives could become more viable options. You wont get your dream OS without an expensive fee, or until they open up ‘propitiatory’ hardware.

    Hey Kris. I got faith, just not in software developers. I wouldn’t put my trust in any of them :)
