Career Advice

// 29th August

I was watching JTV the other day, and saw a live Missy Higgins performance.

I quite liked Missy Higgins’ first album, but I really didn’t like her second one. She dropped the folk and really turned up the pop, and she’s just too genuine to do pop.

I think she should go electric. Grab a band and maybe do some post-hardcore, Saosin-style. Or grab a decent programmer and do some electronica, Róisín Murphy-style. I’d get in to that.

FaceSpace

// 27th August

Well FaceBook has been around long enough now, so like MySpazz before it, it’s high time we started mocking it more. Starting with name-calling.

I believe Josh has used the term ‘FaceFail’.

Scott Dooley has lately been referring to it as ‘DorkBook’.

The best terms will make play on the word sounds, while also referring the nature of the object. I’m not very clever though, so I’ve come up with ‘MyFace’ / ‘SpaceBook’, ‘ArseBook’, ‘FaceHook(Up)’, ‘StalkBook’ / ‘FaceStalk’, and ‘WasteBook’.

I’m probably late to the game though, so no doubt this important topic has already been discussed.

AUSMS

// 23rd August

Things that are hard to do when you are half blind:

  • Work (shift eyes between multiple computer screens)
  • Blink (the stitches scratch your eyelids)
  • Measure how full the cup is, how far the food is from your face, how far to throw something
  • Not blink (dry eyes are very painful)
  • Read.

Things that are easy to do when you are half blind:

  • Send text messages
  • Attempt to listen to every Australian track in your music library
  • Sleep

If anyone wants me to send them a text message containing my thoughts on each of the last fourteen hours of Australian tracks in my music library, please let me know. I’m bored.

Bong In My Eye

// 21st August

I just had an eye operation. It was awesome.

This is going to contain a lot of spelling mistakes, sorry in advance. I can’t see very well. I’m concentrating very hard on the keyboard and not looking at the screen.

There is nothing like an eye operation to shake up your week, so I was a bit excited about today. It ended up being just like going to the dentist, except that the instruments were shoved in my eye instead of in my mouth.The guy put numbing drops in my eye, and two seconds later put antiseptic in my eye because I ‘won’t be able to feel it anyway’ but it stung nonethless. Then he stuck a needle in my eye. Then he spent about twenty minutes digging a hole in my eye, and filling it in again, while I had the best view in the house. I was surprised that there was no brace to hold my head still, or anything like that. What if I’d sneezed? It’d have all ended in tragedy. During the procedure we talked abut the possibility of having coloured lights installed on the roof, because apparently some patients have a lot of trouble looking in the right direction when they are asked. Not me though, I have excellent fixation. What a dud superpower. Half an hour after I went in I was back out on the street with a bloody tissue up against my eye.

Because my good eye was operated on, and I can hardly see properly out the other one, I am now getting a headache from trying to focus on things with an eye that just won’t focus, and my ten stitches rubbing against my eyelid. Sleeping is the most comfortable activity at the moment, but I’m starting to get bored of it.

Oh and my eye looks mad scary right now. It has a huge moon shaped red scar across it.

Australian, Single

// 20th August

I tried to do some serious shopping on the weekend. For stuff I need, rather than music I need. It was a semi-success, I found tonnes of cheap-as-chips sunglasses, and bought three pair. Now I don’t need to be so worried about wrecking my good pair.

I did accidentally buy some great music though.

Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping Pong (Single)

Just A Song About Ping Pong from Operator Please. Despite these kids writing entirely stupid songs, they are catchy, and completely rock out.

Operator Please - Cement Cement (EP)

Cement Cement by Operator Please.

Katie Noonan - Time to Begin

Katie Noonan’s Time To Begin single. I love george, particularly their first album, so I had a quick squiz at this single, to find a cover of Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun on it! Being slightly obsessed with b-sides, I bought it.

Kisschasy - Opinions Won't Keep You Warm at Night (Single)

I really don’t like Kisschasy. Even moreso their new song Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm at Night. It’s middle-of-the-road try-hard political rock, and it’s completely boring. But just as I flicked past this CD I was thinking about how you should always check the track list when a single catches your eye, just in case there’s a gem on there - usually a nice cover version. So I checked this single, and it has two covers! You Am I’s Berlin Chair and Regurgitator’s Blubber Boy. They are even pretty good! (For a second I thought God must have put the thought in my mind, but that would be stupid).

Playboy Bunny

// 13th August

Those Dodo Internet Advertisements are still pretty kinky/disturbing.

Just in case you were unsure of how far we’ve slipped though, there’s a new contender for awkward adverts on television. The Duracell Bunny, a battery-operated stuffed toy previously happy with winning the athletics race and dragging his competitors up the last half of the mountain after their batteries went dead, now finishes off his heroics with a session in the sauna with a harem of female stuffed bunnies. What on earth? How is that relevant or appropriate? I wonder what sort of person is attracted to these adverts. We fail.

Mail Challenge

// 8th August

Today I got mail addressed to Prime Minister John Howard.

On the weekend I was given a postcard put out by the Micah Challenge / MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY people, addressed to the Prime Minister asking him to make good on a bunch of very vague goals regarding halving global poverty by 2015. I don’t go out of my way to sign petitions and whatnot, because I’m too sceptical of what I don’t know and too lazy to find out what I should know, but I signed this postcard and was told it would be put in the mail for me.

The postcard seems to have been quite badly designed though. It’s the shape and size of a postcard, so obviously trying to fit that bill, except that the intended recipients address has been printed on the front, where the photo would usually be. My address was hurriedly scrawled on the back, where a postcards address would usually be. So it came to me. I think our Prime Minister is not going to get as many postcards as Micah Challenge were hoping.
