Two Cents On Browser Elitism
Derek Featherstone recently wrote an article arguing that we should cater to users and not to browsers when considering the inclusion of technologies that only work on standards compliant browsers. It’s a fair enough argument, that we should design for accessibility for the majority of users. But the way I see it, browser elitism will (hopefully) help all those users, currently being excluded, in the long term. This of course depends on the assumption that the uptake of standards compliant browsers will force the currently non-compliant browsers to pull their act together. Which is where we come in. The more we design for standards compliant browsers (not saying we exclude IE entirely, it obviously still has to be useable), the more people switch, forcing changes, resulting in a better situation all round.
No pain no gain, right?

Sex And Why
Michael U. Halvorsen has made available Coldplay’s new single, Speed Of Sound. Not saying you should go and download it, that’d be illegal. But it’s there, you know, in case you were wondering.

Indiana
You would think that I would learn.
I got up extra-early this morning, knowing that the road would be closed and that I should try and get to university on time. Spent two hours in wasting time in town, only to turn up to uni and find that there weren’t actaully any classes. Again.
We’re meeting for the lecture on Friday (22nd April) as per schedule, followed by tutorial + workshop next Wednesday (27th April).
See, my problem is that I assume a forum post like that means there will actually be a tutorial and workshop on Wednesday April twenty seventh, but over in university-lecturer-land, that’s not what it means at all.

Friend Of A Friend Of Mine
Someone is selling some good karma on eBay.
Here’s the description, as it’s likely to be removed soon.
So Last Night Right, I got really hammered, and ended up on a train home, apparently, because I woke up 120km from where the party was at, with a Penalty Notice for not Buying a Ticket. $200. I know, It’s My Own Fault for getting so drunk, BUT it provides a special lucky opportunity for you, that’s right, You! to gain some incredibly valuable Good Karma! You see, things are a bit tight for me right now, this whole moving out of home thing is getting more expensive with every bill, and this $200 Fine is so not what I need right now.
So in return for paying off this ticket, in part or in whole, I Won’t Kill Anyone On Purpose. You know you’ve generated a fair pile of Bad Karma, what with all that Porn you’ve been watching, and Cheating on that Special Person You’re With, and those Kittens you put in a Sack with a Brick and Threw Off The Bridge.
The more you give, the more of that bad karma washes away, and the more likely you won’t get killed by someone who really needs that money in your wallet to pay off a Ticket Infringement.
I Will Send You The Paid Ticket, Along with A CD with the Recipt, and I’ll throw some MP3s on there too, how does that sound? and a Picture of me Smiling, cos I’m happy you gave me some money. Five Bucks’d Be Sweet, but like woah, if you paid it all off, there’d be like a whole bucketload of Good Karma in that envolope with the ticket and the CD.

ANZACRONYM
I just saw a DIY ANZAC backyard memorial on a television game show. Lifestyle TV has reached new lows.

Telepathic Surgery
Well, it’s been a while since you’ve heard any tales from the lecture theatre from me. This is due to the fact I’ve only been attending two lectures per week, and both lecturers are fairly normal. But today I decided I’d turn up for my server administration lecture, of which I have only been to one so far this year. Three o’clock Friday afternoon is not a good time to start a two hour lecture given by an Indian who can’t speak English, and doesn’t know anything about the subject. Twenty five minutes after I sat down I got up and announced, Er, I have to go… do stuff…”.
Remembered why I hadn’t been going to those lectures.

After all the rush I did just make it onto the train to Sydney. On the sixth I managed to find Hayo, and we walked around the CBD, discussing much web geekery, and Dutch and Australian culture differences. We realised how little there is to do in Sydney when you havn’t got a lot of money to spend. It probably didn’t help that neither of us knew our way around the place very well. Still, it was lots of fun, hopefully one day I can get to the Netherlands and return the visit.
An intended one week stay turned into two, with (too) many movies, lots of soccer goodness, me locking keys inside the car, too much ice cream, and not enough sleep. I must point out though, that I was extremely restrained in the CD buying department.
Life is Beautiful and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou are quite alright.

Ben Folds’ second solo studio album doesn’t get close to the greatness of Rockin’ The Suburbs. But at least it doesn’t have a really sucky title track.

Radiohead’s Meeting People Is Easy DVD.

Pearl Jam’s Rearviewmirror.
A friend loaned me their car, so my trip back only took six and a half hours, and didn’t result in me wanting to vomit all over the place like usual.
And, is it just me or is everyone having two birthdays a year now? I’ve been invited to five parties in the last fortnight. There’s only so much sugar a body can take.
