FireFlies

// 24th December

The last handful of Christmases, it’s been bushfires. This time it’s Locusts. Got to hand it to them though, they’re due to arrive for Christmas lunch.

Cunning.

Music Arrives Like Butterflies

// 23rd December

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus

One of the things that annoys me are releases that come out in silly cardboard cases, that have the great feature of doing exactly the same as a jewel case, with the added bonus of not fitting into your CD rack, and becoming tatty around the edges. I mean, whoever thought up cardboard CD cases was a genius. Nick Cave has opened my eyes. Never thought I’d fall in love with CD packaging.

I was just a boy when I sat down
To watch the news on TV
I saw some ordinary slaughter
I saw some routine atrocity
My father said, don’t look away
You got to be strong, you got to be bold, now
He said, that in the end it is beauty
That is going to save the world

Someone managed to swipe fifty or so million from an Irish bank. A fine effort. When’s the movie coming out?

Grinspoon - Thrills, Kills, and Sunday Pills

Thrills, Kills, and Sunday Pills has been called a sellout album by some die hard Grinners fans. But then again Chemical Heart was called the same thing when it appeared on the last album. Sellout album isn’t far off the mark, if you’re looking for more tracks like Killswitch or Damn Straight, then you can give this one a miss. Still, the sound isn’t new, it’s just easier to listen to, and it’s still very very good.

Balls

Garden State is a good movie. I never knew Natalie Portman could be so funny. Mr. Braff wrote, starred in, and produced the movie. Imagine that. A fine effort.

Sans Phone

// 11th December

I just got home form seeing Antiskeptic for the fourth time. They are quite possibly my favourite band of ever. Unfortunately it was an all ages gig, so the sound was turned down, and there was enough denim mimi skirts and hair product to … make a gel-filled denim jumping castle the size of a small country. A few songs in some girl next to me took off her shirt. Then some other girl hugged my brother. Then the shirtless girl pushed another girl who fell backwards into my face, making both my lips bleed. Poor Bonnie was so small (comparitively) that she had people pretty much stomping on her all night, so I guess I wasn’t so badly done by though.

While the dodgy support act were playing, Tim and I tried to count how many girls had turned up for the music, that is the girls who weren’t dressed like they were off to the beach. We counted two and a half. Half because we weren’t quite positive about the sex of one…

Despite some weird distractions, the show was great. Again. Still. As usual. In the second last song Andrew Kitchen messed up the lyrics to 60% Intentional, by singing the first verse twice. I managed to meet him in the carpark afterwards and ask him why – he said he was tired, a good enough excuse for a band that tour as much as Antiskeptic.

Woot, another three cheers for Australian music.

Yeeaah.

Goodbye Starlight

// 9th December

Triple J counted down their top ten albums of the year last weekend. If I was less tired, that would lead perfectly in to me talking about my top albums of this year. So.

Because there’s a bit too many, and I can’t narrow it to ten, I put them in three categories. The first list is the absolutely awesome list.

A Song Is A City – Eskimo Joe
Hot Fuss – The Killers
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb – U2
On My Way – Ben Kweller
Please Describe Yourself – Dogs Die In Hot Cars
Sound Shattering Sound – Gyroscope
The Dissociatives – The Dissociatives
The Goodbye Girl – Epicure
The Overture & The Underscore – Sarah Blasko
The Sound Of White – Missy Higgins
We Shall All Be Healed – The Mountain Goats

The second list is also absolutely awesome albums, but ones that I couldn’t quite bring myself to put next to the albums in the above list.

Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
After The Fall – After The Fall
Big Big Love – Little Birdy
Bright Like Neon Love – Cut Copy
Dreams – Evermore
From A Basement On The Hill – Elliott Smith
Has Been – William Shatner
Now We’re Happy – Halfday
Reise Reise – Rammstein
See The World – Gelbison
The Truth About Love – David McCormack & The Polaroids
Welcome To The North – The Music

And the third is a list of the albums that I want to hear more of to decide if they deserve to be in the other two lists.

A Smile – Dappled Cities Fly
American Idiot – Green Day
Blueberry Boat – The Fiery Furnaces
Bodysong – Jonny Greenwood
Crossed Lines – 78 Saab
Danny The Dog – Massive Attack
Dear Friends And Enemies – Big Heavy Stuff
Dresden Dolls – Dresden Dolls
Educated Guess – Ani DiFranco
Escape From Tomorrow Today – The City Lights
Eternal Holiday – Rocket Science
Fake Our Deaths – Deloris
Fiji Baby – Goodshirt
Final Straw – Snow Patrol
Holes In The Valley – Nations By The River
Hopes & Fears – Keane
Let’s Bottle Bohemia – The Thrills
Life Blood – Manic Street Preachers
LockSportKrock – Nikola Sarcevic
Love Is Hell – Ryan Adams
Seven Circles – The Tea Party
Skeleton Jar – Youth Group
Still Life – Aqualung
The Cure – The Cure
Thirsty Merc – Thirsty Merc
Thrills Kills & Sunday Pills – Grinspoon
Together We’re Heavy – Polyphonic Spree
Uh Huh Her – PJ Harvey
Winning Days – The Vines

What were your top albums from this year eh?
